Chocolate - the good, the better and the yum!

Easter is a time of celebration, recreation, rest, and togetherness - and for many, that includes chocolate. Whether it’s an Easter egg hunt with family and friends, gifting a block to someone else, or enjoying a moment of quiet with a piece of dark chocolate, this time of year typically puts chocolate in the spotlight.

Eat the chocolate!

Chocolate and Easter go hand-in-hand! Indulging in chocolate during this time is a tradition that can add to the festive spirit. In fact, 75% of chocolate sold in Australia each year is at Easter! That gives chocolate status as a special treat for both kids and adults.

The good news? You don’t need to ditch chocolate to support your health. Free radicals, which are unstable molecules that form in response to things like stress, pollution, and normal cell activity, can cause damage if they build up. Antioxidants help neutralise these free radicals, reducing oxidative stress in your body and making you less susceptible to heart disease and some cancers. Dark chocolate, which is higher in cocoa solids, is a source of antioxidants and can play a small part in this protective effect when enjoyed in moderation.

And for the teens and young adults - don’t worry about chocolate causing acne. The myth linking chocolate to breakouts has been debunked. While dairy (except for cheese) has been more closely associated with acne, chocolate itself is not to blame.

Simple Gifts Can Be Just as Special

For people who need to avoid chocolate, thoughtful, low-cost alternatives, like a new pair of pyjamas, an Easter book, or a craft activity, can bring just as much joy. Easter can be a great way to slow down and create something meaningful together. Find more easter activity inspo here!

Chocolate Teaches More Than Taste - It Builds Life Skills

Chocolate abundance can offer a great opportunity to help build self-regulation skills, like delayed gratification. While some people naturally pace themselves, others dive straight in. Neither is “wrong”, but with guidance, you can help kids reflect on how their choices make them feel and explore ways to savour and enjoy treats spread out across time.

Food Is Just One Part of the Celebration

The Easter break can be the perfect time to pause, reconnect, and enjoy meals prepared with a little extra time and thought. Whether it’s a special breakfast, a picnic with loved ones, or just using your nice cups and plates, it’s often the experience that makes the moment feel special, not just the food.

What is healthy eating?

Eating healthy is making sure you enjoy a wide variety of foods from each of the five major food groups daily, in the amounts recommended. The five major food groups as recommended by the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating are:

  1. vegetables and legumes/bean
  2. fruit
  3. lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, legumes/beans
  4. grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties
  5. milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.

Foods are grouped together because they provide similar amounts of key nutrients and eating a variety of foods from the list above helps to promote good health and reduce the risk of disease.

Is my diet healthy?

Dietary habits are different between people. Some people choose to follow a particular diet (i.e., Keto diet or vegan diet) while some have to make changes due to certain food restrictions or health conditions. If you want to know if what you usually eat is healthy, then do the Healthy Eating Quiz today to give you the answers in less than 10 minutes.

Why is healthy eating important?

Your HEQ score and personalised feedback report is based on the frequency and variety of healthy core foods you usually eat. This is important because no single food contains all the nutrients we need to stay healthy. Some foods are higher in nutrients than others and people who have a lot of variety in the foods they eat are more likely to be healthy and to stay healthy. In other words, if you can eat a large variety of vegetables as opposed to only 2-3 types of vegetables, the benefits are much greater. This type of diet also helps you to feel better, think better and perform better during your usual daily activities.
