People are often curious about what they can do to improve their diets, what nutrients they might be missing, and how they can add these to their diet for optimal health. Well, one of the best ways to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need is by consuming a balanced and varied diet! This can be achieved by choosing a variety of foods from the five core food groups every day.
The 5 core food groups include:
- Vegetables .
- Fruit.
- Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, legumes/beans.
- Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties.
- Milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.
Each food group contains different nutrients that are essential for us, so consuming different foods from each food group each day is an easy way to make sure you aren’t missing out on anything! If you have a food allergy or intolerance, you may need to find alternate ways to get all of your required nutrients in your diet - so be sure to talk to your GP or dietitian about this.
