Our
gut
microbiome is made up of tiny organisms that live in our gut. A healthy gut
is one where there are more good bacteria than bad. Our diet is a crucial factor in regulating the type of bacteria that colonise our gut. So it is important to eat the right kind of foods to ensure that there is more ‘good’ bacteria. Research has shown that a high-fibre diet which is low in saturated fat and sugar is associated with a healthier gut microbiome. So to keep your gut in tip-top condition here are a list of foods to eat and to avoid…
Foods to eat
- Lots of different types of fruit and vegetables (try a different fruit or veg each day of the week!)
- Whole grain sources (i.e., brown rice, couscous, muesli, oats, Weet-bix).
- Fermented foods (e.g., kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt)
Foods to avoid
- Foods high in saturated fat
- High-meat diet
- Highly processed foods
- Foods high in sugar
- Alcohol
