Fresh, frozen or canned fruit and veg can all be healthy choices! Fresh food is great, but frozen and canned foods are good alternatives – equally nutritious, and really convenient, with long shelf lives if stored correctly.
Remember to keep an eye out for the sodium (salt) content in the canned foods and the added sugar in frozen fruits and veggies. Here are some tips to choose the healthiest frozen or canned fruits or veggies.
Frozen:
- Choose 100% frozen fruits without added sugars.
- Watch for added Sodium (salt), especially vegetables with sauces and seasonings which can contain excess salt and added calories.
Canned:
- Look for fruit that’s canned in water, its own juice, or light syrup (drain and rinse).
- Remember to choose canned vegetables without added salt.
