Activated charcoal is the process of treating charcoal with oxidising gasses at high temperatures making it more absorptive. It is used in hospitals to treat overdoses and some poisonings which is why some people assume it to be healthy. This diet trend has seen activated charcoal in burger buns, smoothies and supplements with claims that it makes it healthier!
But I am afraid this is nothing more than a cool gimmick. It isn’t likely to have any real health benefits and there are also some potential side effects:
- Charcoal can bind medications, reducing their efficacy.
- Charcoal may also bind nutrients.
- Charcoal may lead to constipation.
